For many people, freshness is carefully maintained and yet never entirely assured. Odor can return over the course of the day, often in the moments that matter most, regardless of the products applied that morning.
The explanation lies neither in hygiene nor in perspiration itself, but in the biology of the skin's surface. Understanding it changes how freshness is best approached.
The origin of body odor
Perspiration is very nearly odorless when it first reaches the skin. Body odor develops when bacteria that naturally reside on the skin, chiefly Corynebacterium and Staphylococcus species, metabolize compounds within it. The scent we recognize is a byproduct of that process.
“The root cause of the smell actually takes the combination of the bacteria and the sweat.”
Why conventional products fall short
Conventional products are designed around perspiration and scent rather than the bacteria responsible. Deodorants conceal odor with fragrance that diminishes through the day. Antiperspirants limit perspiration with aluminum salts while leaving the skin's bacteria undisturbed. Natural alternatives rely largely on the same concealment, and formulas containing baking soda may irritate delicate skin.
Each provides temporary relief without addressing the environment in which odor originates.
The role of skin acidity
Healthy skin maintains a naturally acidic surface, with a pH averaging below 5 [9]. This acidity supports the skin's barrier and helps sustain a balanced microbiome [9].
The underarm is an exception. Warm, enclosed and typically around pH 6 to 6.5, it provides conditions in which odor-causing bacteria flourish.
pH 5
In laboratory studies, skin Corynebacteria, a principal odor-causing group, were inhibited at this level of acidity. [7][8]
Returning the skin to its natural acidity is therefore a more considered approach. It addresses the conditions that give rise to odor, without masking it and without interfering with perspiration.

Mandelic acid
Mandelic acid is an alpha hydroxy acid derived from bitter almonds. With a molecular weight approximately twice that of glycolic acid [5][6], it penetrates the skin gradually and evenly, which is why dermatologists regard it as one of the most tolerable acids in its class.
“When we're looking at these acids, I think mandelic acid is probably the one that's the most tolerable.”
It has further been noted for its antimicrobial properties, and for producing fewer irritating side effects than the AHAs found in conventional products [2]. Like all alpha hydroxy acids, it also gently lifts the dead skin cells on which bacteria feed [3].
Formula 003
Formula 003 pairs 4.5% mandelic acid at a formula pH of 3.8, an acidity chosen to return the skin toward its natural state, in a refined body cleanser for daily use.
Massaged onto damp skin for one minute before rinsing, it may be used on the underarms, chest, back, feet and skin folds. Perspiration, a natural and healthy function, is left undisturbed.

Discover Formula 003Beyond freshness
As a gentle exfoliant, mandelic acid also refines the skin's texture. With continued use, it may help clarify the appearance of pores across the chest and back, and bring a more even look to skin tone [3][4].
